BerlinBackBone is a project of the freethinking culture in Berlin looking to provide affortable highbandwith internetgateway. the first location we were looking to connect was the c-base project located at the rungestrasse 20 which is located in one of the areas of berlin where it is not possible to get a normal DSL connection from a (commercial) telecomunication company.

now BerlinBackBone is working on setting up a network which any nonprofit culture/newmedia organistion like c-base, bootlab, cccb, tacheles and KuFa can join, and so create an 'independent wireless datacloud' over the roofs of berlin.

in this totaly new free space, we can play with new wireless technology and we can find out how the network in a culture-social-geek environment works. at this time none of us has any experience with free networks like this. That means, we have to learn, how to organise this under a democratic focus, for example ensure the fair usage of the network. ('PicoPeering' is one of big buzzwords in the scene, but this agreement shows the right way!)

In the beginning the BerlinBackBone is a point2point as well as a point2multipoint network. I called it "freeculturegrid". the next step will be that every point in the network transmitts the signal in its own area/neighborhood to enlarge the network. we prefer the olsr (Optimized Link State Routing protocol). technology.

Der BerlinBackBone entsteht in zusammenarbeit verschiedener vereine und organisationen aus dem kulturellen cyberspace berlins. Die ersten Vernetzungen begehen das bootlab, der c-base e.V., das tacheles und der cccb. Diese vier standorte sind aber erst der anfang. Es werden in absehbarer Zeit die Lehrterkulturfabrik und der in-berlin e.V. auch an das netz angeschlossen.
